GAME FEATURES
INTRODUCTION
Hemsball is a fun and entertaining new sport that can be played by people of all ages. It can be played easily in both outdoor and indoor areas. While playing Hemsball it is important to have good hand-eye coordination, a high level of focus and concentration in order to be able to catch the ball and serve it. The name of the sport, as shown below, was derived from the first letters of the combination of the performance that is portrayed during the game.
The objective of the game is to throw the Hemsball into the Hemsball hoop that is on the Hemsball target board on the floor, without hitting the hoop and make it go to the player side and into the “player area” and to prevent the rivals from achieving the same goal. While sending the ball into the Game and “player’s” area they may catch the ball in any way including on the plates where they are stepping.
The ball is put into play with a draw in which the loser serves. The player who serves will throw the ball at the hoop to send it to the rival side. The counting will continue until a ball touches inside the hoop, goes out or a player makes a mistake. The player who wins a point gets to serve.

The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Youth and Sports, Sports for Everyone (HİS) Federation decided to support HEMSBALL in their letter no. THİS/31 dated January 6, 2012.
After participating in various activities a tremendous interest developed for our new sport and with its introduction especially during the 2nd Balkan Sports for Everyone Sports Festival that was organized by HİS on May 10-14, 2012, the sport of HEMSBALL won the admiration of national and international participants alike and attracted the attention of the academic community.
A pilot region application was conducted on April 16-20 at the Çiğli Pre-School Sports Festival organized by the Gülen Kora Elementary School, in which HEMSBALL was introduced to 30 Schools and 2000 students. The importance of HEMSBALL in terms of its contribution to making sports part of a daily routine for elementary school students and in the development of the children’s psychomotor skills was observed by the teachers and educators.
In order to help spread the sport and make it possible for people in all walks of life do sports, HEMSBALL instructions were given at the İzmir Seferihisar A-1 Type Closed Prison between the dates of July 24-31. The activity of HEMSBALL in prisons allows the opportunity for inmates to be able to do sports easily throughout the day in their wards. At the same time it has provided a solution to excessive immobility, obesity and stress related problems.

5-2 THE FEATURES OF THE HEMSBALL HOOP
Hemsball hoop is of 30 cm, width 18 mm and height 20mm. All colors may be used for the hoop. The Hemsball Hoop is a single piece with the characteristic embossed Hemsball brand on four equal sides.

5-3 THE HEMSBALL TARGET BOARD (DEKOTA) FEATURES
The measurements are a square of 34.5 X 34.5 cm. The Hemsball target board is engraved on two equal sides with the characteristic Hemsball brand. The target point is red measuring 10X10 cm with a Hemsball label.

INTERNATIONAL GAME RULES
6-1 HOW TO START A GAME
The players are allowed 5 minutes to warm up and when this period is over the game will start with a coin flip. Each player goes to their assigned area. The coin flip will determine which player serves first and the loser will start the game by serving to the other side.
6-2 SETS
The game is played based on winning 3 sets. The sets are played based on 12 points. In the junior category games are played based on winning 2 sets. Whichever player wins a point will gain the starting serve. If the points are 11-11 the set is extended to 13 and continues until there is a 2 point difference. Sides are changed after each set.
6-3 POINTS
The ball must touch the inside of the hoop then bounce out and pass the 4cm strip located in front of the other players, then the rival player must catch the ball which has passed the game zone and strip without dropping it a second time and without touching the ground with their feet outside of the stepping area, (the Player may catch the ball with one foot on the plate and one foot in the air) and if they cannot catch it they lose a point.
If the ball does not touch the inside of the hoop the throwing player loses a point.
If the ball touches any part of the hoop which is at the center the thrower loses a point.
If the player throws the ball quickly into the hoop towards the other player while the other player’s hands are up and they cannot catch the ball the throw will be invalid and they lose a point.
If after the ball touches the inside of the hoop then touches the 4cm zone line or the 4x35cm strip (line) the thrower loses a point.
Adjusting the hoop with your feet is against the rules and if a player does this, the other player wins a point.

6-4 SERVING

During the rally the player who catches the ball has to throw the ball to the other side within 5 seconds, if they do not the serve will go to the other player.

6-5 IMAGES OF INVALID THROWS AND CATCHES
As seen in Figure 1 this catch is invalid, the foot must not touch the floor.

Invalid Throws
As seen in Figure 1 this throw is invalid. If the player throws the ball quickly into the hoop towards the other player while the other player’s hands are up and they cannot catch the ball the throw will be invalid.
As seen in Figure 2 this throw is invalid. The ball should not hit any part of the hoop.

6-6 HEMSBALL STEPPING PLATE (ZONE )
While catching a serve and throwing a serve in the zone we can throw or catch the Hemsball ball with either both hands or a single hand.
We can catch the ball by bouncing it off our body.
If the ball falls by sliding out of our hands or naturally (when it comes from the rival player’s serve) into our zone plate we are allowed to catch this ball.
The player can play by crouching down in their zone plate whenever they want.
The player can catch the ball by jumping during a rally as long as they do not go outside of the zone.
The player can catch the ball from any area they can reach during a rally.
The player can catch and throw the ball on one foot.

7. MATERIALS THAT ARE NOT ALLOWED
Metal objects on fingers and wrists like watches, rings, etc. are not allowed. The use of any materials that may affect the player or rival player’s health is not allowed.
8. TIME-OUTS
Players are allowed one time out between sets and the timeouts are restricted to 30 seconds.
Time outs can only be taken during rallys when the ball is out by signaling a T with the hands. After each set the players have a 2 minute resting period.
A player that has to do gamees one after the other may request up to 10 minutes to rest between gamees.
9. BEHAVIOR RULES
The players must know the rules and abide by them.
The players must accept the referee decisions in a sportsmanlike manner without arguing. They will avoid behavior that may damage the reputation of the Hemsball sport.
Players are shown a yellow card in the following situations. The referee will show a yellow card for leaving the game area without permission, having a careless attitude that may affect the trainers, referees and rival players negatively, displaying behavior that could upset the audience, intentionally throwing the ball outside of the playing area, giving the ball a hard kick, kicking the hoop, being disrespectful to the game officials and objecting to referee decisions. If these acts continue a second card and then a red card will be shown.
Players are shown a red card in the following situations. When two yellow cards have been shown, when reputation damaging or insulting words are said or behavior is displayed the referee will show a red card, remove the player from the game and disqualify them. The sets of a player with a red card will be considered 12-0 - 12-0 - 12-0
And they will be considered to have lost the game 3-0. A player who is given a red card will be banned from the tournament. A player who receives a red card will lose their right to play in the next tournament.

10. FAIR PLAY
The players will apply fair play not just towards referees but will also be polite and respectful towards the officials, their rival, trainers and the audience.
11. EXTRAORDINARY PAUSES IN THE GAME
When there is a serious injury during a rally the referee should stop the game and allow the medical crew to come to the game area. In such a situation the head referee will determine the treatment period. When the player is unable to continue playing because of their injury they are considered to have forfeited the game. For example in the Adults they would be considered to have lost the sets 12-0 - 12-0 - 12-0 and the game 3-0. In the Juniors they would be considered to have lost the sets 12-0 - 12-0 - 12-0 and the game 2-0.
12. REFEREES
In two player games HEMSBALL is played with 5 referees.
-The Head referee
-The game referees are two people but when necessary the game can be managed by one person.
-The table referee, also the assistant to the Head Referee.
-The technical referee
12-1 HEAD REFEREE
The Head Referee directs the game from beginning to end. During the game the head referee has authority over all the referees and players. The head referee has the authority to make decisions on all matters including those which are not specified in the rules. The head referee may decide to allow the players to change into sweats during the break and change their uniforms.
No argument should be allowed against the decisions of the head referee.
12-2 GAME REFEREES EXECUTE REFEREEING OF HOOP, PLATE, LINE AND HEIGHT.
The game referees are 2 people but when necessary the game may be directed by one referee. They sit 2m from each player at their assigned location and referee the plate, line, height and hoop actions, execute hoop refereeing and can move freely as long as they do not get too close to the players to check their stepping plates.
The game referees check whether the ball has hit the hoop and gone out, then they hold up a flag to the players and the table referee and state the situation so the table referee can hear. The game referee(s) checks the plates which the players are stepping on, if their feet touch outside of the plate the referee will hold up a flag and tell the players and table referee in a voice they can hear. The game referee(s) checks whether the ball is in or out at the point where the ball’s target area and the player area intersects and holds up a flag to the table referee and tells the player and table referee in a voice they can hear. When the game referee(s) determine that a player with their hands in the air is not going to be able to catch a ball they will raise the flag and tell the players and table referee in a voice they can hear. The game referee(s) will report every find of valid points earned by lowering the flag towards the ground and telling the players and table referee in a voice they can hear.
12-3 TABLE REFEREE (ASSISTANT HEAD REFEREE)
The table referee will toss a coin to determine which player will start the game.(whoever loses the coin toss will start the game.) The serving player will start the game at the table referee’s whistle and throw the ball without passing the 4x35 cm strip in front of them. The rival player will catch the approaching ball without dropping it and without touching their hand or foot outside of the specified area. Other than the serve, the players may pass the 4x35 cm strip with their hands to catch the ball and may throw it back to the other side. Any kind of rule violation is determined by the game referee (s) and counted as a foul which is signaled by raising the flag and notifying the players and table referee so they can hear. The table referee who sees the flag will signal by hand to the player who has won the serve and add one point to this player.
12-4 THE TECHNICAL REFEREE
The duty of the technical referee is to inspect the game area, the ball and other materials before the game. The tournament head referee is also assigned with this responsibility.
12-5 REFEREE UNIFORMS
The referees will wear black pants and dark blue polo shirts.
12-6 REFEREE SIGNS

The head referee may decide to allow the players to change into sweats during the break and change their uniforms.
No argument should be allowed against the decisions of the head referee.
12-2 GAME REFEREES EXECUTE REFEREEING OF HOOP, PLATE, LINE AND HEIGHT.
The game referees are 2 people but when necessary the game may be directed by one referee. They sit 2m from each player at their assigned location and referee the plate, line, height and hoop actions, execute hoop refereeing and can move freely as long as they do not get too close to the players to check their stepping plates.
The game referees check whether the ball has hit the hoop and gone out, then they hold up a flag to the players and the table referee and state the situation so the table referee can hear. The game referee(s) checks the plates which the players are stepping on, if their feet touch outside of the plate the referee will hold up a flag and tell the players and table referee in a voice they can hear. The game referee(s) checks whether the ball is in or out at the point where the ball’s target area and the player area intersects and holds up a flag to the table referee and tells the player and table referee in a voice they can hear. When the game referee(s) determine that a player with their hands in the air is not going to be able to catch a ball they will raise the flag and tell the players and table referee in a voice they can hear. The game referee(s) will report every find of valid points earned by lowering the flag towards the ground and telling the players and table referee in a voice they can hear.
12-3 TABLE REFEREE (ASSISTANT HEAD REFEREE)
The table referee will toss a coin to determine which player will start the game.(whoever loses the coin toss will start the game.) The serving player will start the game at the table referee’s whistle and throw the ball without passing the 4x35 cm strip in front of them. The rival player will catch the approaching ball without dropping it and without touching their hand or foot outside of the specified area. Other than the serve, the players may pass the 4x35 cm strip with their hands to catch the ball and may throw it back to the other side. Any kind of rule violation is determined by the game referee (s) and counted as a foul which is signaled by raising the flag and notifying the players and table referee so they can hear. The table referee who sees the flag will signal by hand to the player who has won the serve and add one point to this player.
12-4 THE TECHNICAL REFEREE
The duty of the technical referee is to inspect the game area, the ball and other materials before the game. The tournament head referee is also assigned with this responsibility.

The referees will wear black pants and dark blue polo shirts.
